Sometimes women with large breasts experience discomfort from the weight and pressure that they can place on the upper back. Breast reduction surgery usually results in noticeable relief from back pain caused by large breasts.
Women with large breasts may also wish to have their breast size reduced for cosmetic reasons. Dr. Guy Watts is a highly-experienced specialist plastic surgeon who specialises in all areas of breast surgery, including breast reduction, as well as other areas of cosmetic plastic surgery.
Breast Reduction Surgery
There are several ways by which breast reduction surgery may be performed. If you wish to reduce the size of your breasts by a single cup size, we may be able to use liposuction alone. Breast that have a high fat content are potentially suitable to this technique but those with dense glandular elements and excess skin require more formal breast reduction techniques.
The more common method will involve the removal of fat, breast tissue and skin with the remaining breast elements sculpted to improve the shape of your breasts. The most common incision pattern used in the Wise pattern or anchor type incision, this involves an incision around the areolar, a vertical incision down to the breast fold and a variable length horizontal incision along the breast fold. Although a vertical pattern alone can be used in certain breast types, the addition of the horizontal incision improves shape and longevity of the results. In the majority of patients these incisions fade to pale, flat, white scars with the passage of time. All patients are guided through the healing phase and Dr Watts has specific scar reduction techniques that he utilised with all patients.
Dr Watts will perform the breast reduction surgery in hospital while you are under general anaesthetic. All hospitals are accredited and Dr Watts only works with Specialist Anaesthetists to ensure patient safety.
After Breast Reduction Surgery
You may be able to go home the same day however in most instances you will be required to stay overnight. Drains are utilised for the first 24 hours and water resistant dressing are applied to improve bathing after surgery. Most patients can return to non-physical work within 2 weeks. The recovery is relatively painless but adequate pain control is provided for all patients during the healing phase.
To make sure that you have a fast and safe recovery with no complications, Dr. Watts will regularly check-up on you to make sure that your breasts are healing well. A supportive garment is worn for 6 weeks after the surgery to ensure comfort and support for the incisions during the healing phase.
